The newly built terrace of a Mallorca beach club that collapsed and tragically killed four people last week was revealed to have been built illegally.

The extension of the ‘chill-out terrace’ of the Medusa Beach Club in Playa de Palma, on the Balearic island of Mallorca, was built illegally, according to court documents obtained by Last minute.

The terrace of the two-story building overlooking the beach, located on Cartago Street, collapsed on itself without warning last Thursday night, killing four people and leaving 16 injured.

Local media reported that investigators are sending their reports to judicial authorities, as well as homicide agents from Spain’s National Police Corps, with the aim of arresting and criminally charging the club’s owners for reckless homicide and dangerousness.

The report comes after it was reported that the club’s owners unveiled the extension just days before the collapse.

A photo of the renovation was posted on Instagram last Wednesday with the caption: “Totally different, new roof.”

The snapshot, along with all other photographs, was removed from the club’s Instagram page following the collapse and replaced with a single statement reading in Spanish, English and German:

‘We are in a state of shock. From Medusa Beach we want to express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We will do everything possible and collaborate with the authorities to understand what happened.

“We would like to deeply thank the emergency crews for their quick action.”

The bar is understood to be popular with British and German tourists, although details about the identities of those affected remain scarce. The Foreign Office said on Thursday there were no reports that British nationals were involved in the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident in Palma and there are currently no reports that British nationals have been involved.” We remain in contact with the Spanish authorities.’

Rescuers lifted huge chunks of masonry and concrete from the ruins.

Of the four people who have died so far after the collapse, only one has been identified.

Senegalese Abdoulaye Diop was a bouncer at the Black Magic nightclub, a club just a three-minute walk from Medusa.

The others, made up of a Spaniard and two German women, have not yet been identified by the authorities.

Playa de Palma is the beach area located to the east of the Majorcan capital. It is especially popular with British and German tourists. Around 3.2 million Britons travel to Mallorca every year.
