A mother and daughter were horrified to see a huge snake grab their cat in a suburban backyard – and the attack was captured on CCTV.

In footage posted to social media on Thursday, a cat is seen relaxing in the backyard of a property in Buderim on the Sunshine Coast when the mother comes out alarmed that the huge snake had hidden behind it.

As it screams, the snake grabs the cat’s butt, causing the frightened pet to run into the house while following the reptile, prompting horrified screams from a young girl inside.

The footage was posted on the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 Facebook page by company founder Stuart McKenzie, who said it was one of the “craziest videos” he had ever seen.

McKenzie revealed that the mother and daughter managed to separate the snake from their pet and get the python out of the carpet outside before calling him.

“Luckily they were able to get the snake away from the cat, the cat went away for a while and we ended up relocating the snake – it curled up behind his barbecue,” Mr McKenzie said.

“This is one of the craziest, scariest videos you’ll ever see.”

The company’s Facebook page also praised the owners.

“Honestly, the mother and daughter were very brave and did a fantastic job,” the video’s caption read.

“It was a lot of effort to help the cat and not hurt the snake.”

A short clip shows the python on the back porch with the mother running around the side of the house to get away from it.

McKenzie later took video of the python curled up in a catch bag.

“Now obviously it’s a tough situation if a carpet python ever grabs a pet, but they did the right thing, they were able to get the snake off the cat safely, they removed the coils from the cat and the snake tried to put it to sleep outside.” said Mr McKenzie.

The python was released into a bush.

“Go away, buddy, don’t grab any more pets, please,” he told the retreating reptile.
