Former Wallabies star Greg Martin accused the Matildas of “having their heads up their arse” and “believing their own hype” in a stunning outburst after Germany beat them 3-0 in their Olympics opener.
Martin, who played nine Tests for Australia, hit out at coach Tony Gustavsson’s side, who now face a huge battle to advance beyond the group stage in Paris.
“Our defenders were so lazy they looked like they had lead in their feet,” Martin told Brisbane’s Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux and Dan.
‘Simply put, the Matildas have become the Brisbane Broncos. They have their heads so far up their arses that they have believed their own hype.
‘Every picture I have (on Instagram) is of them drinking a cocktail on a beach or in a nightclub in the last six months… they haven’t been doing the hard work.
‘They think that you just have to show up… and (after) what happened at the World Cup, those performances will simply be repeated.
‘The harder you work, the luckier you get, and right now it seems like the Tillies aren’t working very hard.’
Former Matilda star Amy Chapman also minced no words in her comments, calling the meek performance “one-dimensional.”

He then criticised Gustavsson for not using his bench.
“It opened up more, particularly for Mary (Fowler) when they made those changes – some good players who were willing to hold the ball and connect,” Chapman said on Nine’s broadcast.
‘I thought (rookie) Sharn Freier made a difference, she came in and ran at the players, she’s a natural left-hander.
“I think those changes needed to happen earlier because at that point we were 3-0 and it’s a very steep hill to climb.”
