Team USA has reclaimed its title as the world’s best swimming nation after eclipsing Australia’s gold medal haul in the final swim of the Paris Olympics.

And American fans have taken to social media to mock their great rivals following their triumph.

The United States and Australia have maintained a formidable rivalry for many decades, and both countries boast the greatest swimmers ever to set foot in the pool.

The United States has long outpaced its Australian rivals in terms of medals, but the pendulum swung last year when Australia claimed more gold medals at the world championships in Japan.

This led to a heated war of words between the two sides, with now-retired Australian legend Cate Campbell branding the Americans “sore losers.”

“They’re sore losers,” Campbell said on the Today show last year.

‘I mean Australia being on top of the world is one thing, but beating the United States is so much sweeter.

‘On the first night of the competition we didn’t have to hear the national anthem played all around the stadium. I can’t express how happy that made me.

“If I hear that song again it will be too soon. Bring on Paris! That’s all I have to say to the United States. Stop being sore losers.”

His comments prompted a response from the legendary Michael Phelps, who urged his countrymen to use Campbell’s words as inspiration for Paris.

And there was certainly something driving the U.S. women’s medley relay team that swept the Australians in the final race of the program.

With the gold medals tied at seven apiece, both nations knew the winner of the 4x100m final would take home bragging rights as the world’s best swimming nation.

But the United States was simply too much for the Australians, with Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske powering the team home to break the world record.

And once their status was restored, Americans took to social media to mock the Australians.

“Lol Australia,” one Twitter user posted. “The US is now beating you in GOLD MEDALS too, morons. Australia has been one-sidedly fighting the US this whole time and we just found out. I thought swimming was your thing Australia!”

Another fan said: “It was probably one of the worst Olympics for American swimming and we still got more golds than Australia.”

“Oh, what is this, Australia?” said a third fan. “Less medals and less gold than the United States in swimming? What happened?”

Referring to Campbell’s comment, a fourth fan said: “Sorry Aussies, but you’re going to hear another Stars and Stripes song. Americans win the gold medal total in the pool!”

Another fan sent Australia the following message: “Very specifically to the Australian swimmers who have been talking down to American swimming instead of just celebrating their own improvements over the last few years… USA! USA! USA!”
