- Mollie O’Callaghan won her second Olympic gold medal in Paris
- She defeated her compatriot Ariarne Titmus in the final.
Mollie O’Callaghan triumphed over her training partner and former Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus to win gold in Paris.
The Australian superstars advanced to the 200m freestyle final as the top two finishers, setting the stage for the ultimate showdown between the two clubmates.
Titmus was seeking to become the first swimmer to successfully defend his 200m and 400m freestyle titles at an Olympic Games, and was the favourite for the race after performing better in the semi-finals.
He also broke O’Callaghan’s 200m freestyle record just six weeks before Monday’s big race.
But O’Callaghan saved her best effort for the perfect moment, touching the wall ahead of her teammate to take gold.
The 21-year-old was stalking Titmus as the Tokyo champion looked to take control in the first 150 metres.
It was on the final corner that O’Callaghan really put the pedal to the metal, moving ahead of Titmus to set a time of 1.53:27.
Titmus, meanwhile, was more than half a second slower and took silver with a time of 1:53.81.
It is O’Callaghan’s second gold medal of the Paris Olympics, having claimed the top honour in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay on Saturday night.
