Kaepernick hasn’t played since the end of the 2016 season, when he was released by San Francisco as the new regime led by coach Kyle Shanahan wanted to go in a different direction at quarterback.
He emerged as one of the league’s young stars when he took over as the starter in San Francisco in 2012, and helped the Niners reach the Super Bowl that season.
His play began to regress in 2014 and he was injured midway through the following season and lost his starting job.
Things changed the following preseason when Kaepernick began protesting during the national anthem, drawing the ire of critics who included then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.
He alleged that the entire NFL had banned him for his protests during the previous season’s anthem. He met with Seattle and had informal talks with Baltimore, but never got a closer look.
Kaepernick filed a complaint with the NFL in 2017 about his lack of opportunities and resolved it in 2019, but has remained out of the game since.
He last had a workout with the Las Vegas Raiders a little over a year ago, in May 2022, and reports say he impressed scouts.
