A man has died after being found unconscious in the middle of a street following a suspected hit-and-run.

Tasmanian Detective Inspector David Gill said the man in his 50s was found unconscious on Swanston Street in the northern Hobart suburb of New Town at about 2.50am on Friday.

The man had suffered “significant injuries to his torso and neck.”

He was rushed to Royal Hobart Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but was unable to be saved.

Police believe the man was hit by a 4×4 vehicle.

“Throughout the day, detectives have conducted numerous enquiries, including extensive door-knocking and the collection of CCTV footage, to establish the man’s movements early this morning and how he sustained his injuries,” Inspector Gill said on Friday.

‘Late in the afternoon, police seized the 4×4 vehicle believed to have been involved. The vehicle will be examined by a forensic expert.

‘Two people who were believed to have been in the vehicle at the time it was located in Swanston St this morning are assisting police with their enquiries.’

No charges have been filed.

The 50-year-old man was seen on CCTV at the Kmart Plaza with another man, who was interviewed by police.

He is no longer considered a person of interest and investigations are ongoing.

“The police investigation is ongoing and I would urge anyone with information to come forward,” Inspector Gill said.
