A cold wave will hit Australia in the coming days, with the southeastern region (circled) being the most affected.

The unusually warm weather that has affected Australia over the past few weeks is about to come to a sudden end with a dramatic cold snap approaching.

The cold change will spread across central and south-eastern Australia on Friday as the mercury drops for millions of people.

Cold temperatures are expected across much of southern Australia, with Saturday’s high in Melbourne forecast to be six degrees below the September average.

By Sunday, the New South Wales south coast could see temperatures up to eight degrees cooler than average.

A cold front travelling east towards Tasmania is expected to bring rain to the south, and the freezing blast hitting south-east Australia is expected to last into next week.

“This weekend will be almost wintry in Tasmania and Victoria,” News from heaven Meteorologist Rob Sharpe said.

‘That will then push towards the New South Wales coast during Saturday afternoon and evening.’

But there is better news for northern Australia, where the weather is expected to remain warm and Brisbane is expected to get hotter over the weekend.
