Shane John Marshall, 50 (pictured), has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after a newborn baby died in his care.

A man has been charged two months after a newborn allegedly suffered fatal injuries in his care.

Shane John Marshall, 50, of Parafield Gardens in Adelaide, has been charged with manslaughter after the seven-week-old baby was rushed to Women’s and Children’s Hospital on July 24.

Police allege the baby suffered injuries earlier in the day at an address in the northern suburbs. The advertiser reported.

The baby died six days later, prompting South Australian Police to declare it a serious crime that day.

Following extensive investigations, detectives with the Major Crimes Investigation Branch arrested Marshall on Wednesday and charged him with one count of murder.

Police will allege Marshall inflicted injuries on the baby while he was in her care on the same afternoon the seven-week-old was rushed to hospital.

The baby’s identity has been suppressed by the court.

Marshall appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court via video link on Wednesday afternoon, where he sat silently throughout the proceedings.

The court heard that police needed months before they could finalise their case against him, the Advertiser reported.

Prosecutors told the court they would need at least four months to prepare their case against the 50-year-old.

Marshall’s attorney, Kate Opolski, asked Magistrate Judge Roderick Jensen to release her client on bail.

Prosecutors did not oppose the bail request and the judge agreed to release Marshall, citing the length of time he would have spent in pretrial detention if the case went to trial.

Marshall was released on $1,000 bail with strict bail conditions.

He must live at his parents’ home, not communicate with certain people and must report to prison.

Marshall had little to say and tried to shield his face with his high-visibility jersey as he walked off the court surrounded by media crews.

“No comment,” a supporter was heard telling reporters.

Marshall is due back in court in January.
