Luke Brattan has enjoyed many highlights in his decorated A-League career, but playing against a Premier League opposition is incredibly difficult to beat.

Brattan, 34, will be a key figure for the A-League All Stars when they take on Newcastle United on Friday and, surprisingly, the Sydney FC captain will play through the pain of a broken foot.

“I got hurt in the knockout final (against Macarthur FC on May 4) so I’ve taken a few knocks (needles) to keep going,” the defensive midfielder told Daily Mail Australia.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play against teams like Everton and Liverpool before, so I wasn’t going to miss this game.

“It’s a special opportunity, one that I’m sure all the boys will take advantage of.”

“For young people, you never know who’s watching around the world.”

Brattan will also watch the A-League Grand Final on Saturday night when the Central Coast Mariners host Melbourne Victory in Gosford.

His Sky Blues can consider themselves very unlucky not to play in the decider, after a series of controversial decisions went against them in the second leg of the qualifier on 18 May.

“It was difficult to deal with, we played very well, I was proud of the boys, we had a great season,” he said.

“I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Out of contract, Brattan wants to stay at Sydney FC, but knows the decision is not in his hands.

“I’ll sit down with my teammate after this (All Stars) game and decide what we want to do next,” he said.

“I’ve been at the club since 2019, hopefully we can fix something.”

The A-League All Stars will take on Newcastle at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium from 5:05pm AEST on Friday, and the A-League Women’s All Stars will take on Arsenal from 8:05pm AEST on the same place as part of a double header.

Matildas trio Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross will be in the Gunners squad as part of World Football Week.
