  • The couple had been dating for several years and shared their relationship online.

Paris’ chances of being the true city of love during the Olympic Games ended when two of the athletes revealed they had broken up.

Footballer Lea Schuller and sailor Lara Vadlau were in a relationship before the Games and regularly spoke about their love and shared snapshots of their life together on social media.

They represented different countries at the Games: Schuller was from Germany and played for Bayern Munich and his country, while Vadlau was from Austria.

They had hoped to spend some time together in the French capital, but things appear to have gone badly quickly, so much so that the relationship no longer exists.

However, speaking to O3, Vadlau revealed the end of the relationship, but insisted the duo remain on good terms.

Vadlau won gold in the mixed dinghy race with teammate Lukas Maehr on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Schuller's Germany fell short in the semi-finals of the football tournament.

“Lea is no longer my partner,” she said. “Of course I’m very proud of her and we’re still very good friends. I have my fingers crossed for her.”

There had seemingly been few signs that the relationship was about to come to an end, with Schuller revealing her excitement at going to the Games with her other half, despite being on opposite teams.

“It’s great that we were able to go to Paris together,” he said before the meeting. “Maybe we’ll meet up a few times.”

‘We rarely see each other, only about 100 days a year, because Lara is away a lot and training hard to prepare for the Games.’

Schuller, 26, began her playing career at Hulser SV before joining SGS Essen in 2012. She made her Frauen Bundesliga debut at the age of 16 and played more than 100 times for the club before joining Bayern in 2020.

She is now a regular player in Germany’s top flight and for the senior national team, scoring 57 goals in 85 games for her club and 45 in 66 for her country.

She played as a forward for Germany in the 2-1 defeat to England at Wembley in the Euro 2022 final.

Germany lost 1-0 to the United States in the semifinals of this week’s Olympics and will play Spain in the bronze medal match on Friday.

Meanwhile, Vadlau won gold in mixed dinghy sailing alongside teammate Lukas Maehr on Thursday.

She has been competing at the Olympics since London 2012, winning gold for the first time in Paris this week.
