Inter Miami is headed to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup after thrashing Nashville in the second leg of the round of 16 at Chase Stadium.
They were the usual suspects on the scoreboard for Miami in a 3-1 win, with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Robert Taylor all scoring in the 5-3 aggregate victory.
Unfortunately for Tata Martino’s side, however, it was not all plain sailing that night as Messi departed after just 50 minutes, sparking injury fears ahead of the international break.
The David Beckham-owned franchise heads to Washington to play DC United this weekend, before Messi and company head to their national teams and away from MLS.
Overall, though, it will be a good night of work for Miami, who cruised to victory in front of a spirited crowd in South Florida.
After coming back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw in the 95th minute of the first leg, there were no such worries on Wednesday night.
Suárez continued his excellent form in the pink Inter Miami shirt to open the scoring just eight minutes later, receiving a pass from Messi to beat the goalkeeper.
Messi was on the scoreboard a few minutes later, when he received a pass from Diego Gómez, before firing past the goalkeeper and into the right side of the net.
After the break, Taylor replaced Messi in the 50th minute and scored a goal himself, directing a beautiful Suarez cross into the top corner.
In injury time, Sam Surridge scored for Nashville, but it is Inter Miami and their star-studded squad that advance to the next round of the competition.
The fans will hope, however, that Messi’s blow is not too serious.
