Earlier this week, Graeme Souness criticised Mainoo for “not understanding his position” following England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain on Sunday.
Mainoo began the tournament on the bench as Gareth Southgate experimented during the group stage with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher alongside Declan Rice in midfield, but he started all four knockout games after frequently impressing as a substitute.
The teenager shone as one of England’s standout players against Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands, earning his place in the final after just eight caps for his country.
Mainoo struggled to make an impact during the final match in Berlin and was replaced midway through the second half by substitute Cole Palmer, who cancelled out Nico Williams’ goal with a superb equaliser from outside the area before Mikel Oyarzabal scored a heart-breaking winner for Spain in the 86th minute.
Despite admitting Mainoo is “very talented on the ball”, Souness criticised the youngster for his “naivety” in an England shirt, claiming he “strays too far” from his midfield position.

“I think he’s very good on the ball, he’s very talented on the ball,” Souness told the Up Front podcast.
‘But he doesn’t fully understand his position. He wanders off the pitch, he empties the midfield too easily.
‘I saw it against Iceland[during England’s final Euro 2024 warm-up match]and they were throwing it left and right.
‘He came on as a substitute when they were 1-0 up[during England’s opening Euro 2024 game against Serbia]and the first thing he did was chase the goalkeeper and try to put him under pressure. It’s naive, he’s still learning the game.’
