They were the opening act for today’s main event – famous royals took centre stage at Wimbledon yesterday before the Princess of Wales will cheer the nation this afternoon when she presents the winner’s trophy to the men’s champion.

Actress Meg Bellamy, who played Kate Middleton in Netflix blockbuster The Crown, and Dame Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for The Queen, were among the big names to take their places in the Royal Box for the women’s singles final.

Zendaya, who recently starred in Challengers, a romantic comedy set in the world of tennis, joined the celebrity caravan that saw Czech Barbora Krejcikova beat Italian Jasmine Paolini in a thrilling three-set match to secure her second Grand Slam title.

Hollywood royalty Kate Beckinsale, Hugh Jackman and Tom Cruise were also there.

The Princess of Wales had been expected to be there to present the trophy to Ms Krejcikova, but Kensington Palace confirmed she was “looking forward to being there” today.

Kate, a patron of the All England Club for eight years, could be joined by her daughter Princess Charlotte, nine, who was in the men’s final last year.

Kate will present the trophy to the winner after seven-time champion Novak Djokovic takes on reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in a repeat of their thrilling five-set clash from last year.

Her appearance would come hours before her husband, Prince William, watches England’s men attempt to win their first major soccer trophy since 1966.

She often brings her eldest son, Prince George, 10, to matches but Kensington Palace has yet to confirm whether any of the Welsh children will accompany their parents to Berlin or Wimbledon.

Kate’s appearance on Centre Court will be her second public appearance since she was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and began undergoing preventative chemotherapy. She attended Trooping the Colour last month.

The Centre Court crowd had a thrilling British victory to celebrate last night when Henry Patten and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara won the men’s doubles in a final-set tiebreak.

Patten, 28, from Manningtree in Essex, broke down in tears after he and Heliovaara beat Australia’s Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson in an epic clash.
