How did Johnny Manziel manage to lose 40 pounds at age 23?

As the former Cleveland Browns quarterback told retired Denver Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe, it was a “strict hitting diet.”

Manziel spoke with Sharpe about his disappointing NFL career and his battle with addiction on Sharpe’s podcast. Shay Shay Club.

The troubled former Heisman Trophy winner admitted he hit rock bottom at the end of his second season in Cleveland, going just 2-4 while continuing to party off the field. And when he finished the season, Manziel rushed to Las Vegas, where he continued to live a fast life to the detriment of his own health.

“At that moment, man, I looked in the mirror and I didn’t look any different than when I was in Cleveland,” he said. ‘Until I stepped on a scale at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, I didn’t realize I had lost 40 pounds.

‘Coke, oxy and Percocet were very, very tumultuous in my life and they came up especially on the days when I was wandering the Hollywood hills. It makes sense that you see me so sporadically. I weighed 210 pounds when I left Cleveland. I was 170 pounds sitting in Las Vegas.

‘How do you lose 40 pounds?’ Manziel wondered. You’re on a strict punch diet.

Describing his mindset at the time, Manziel said: “I was like, ‘What am I doing? Oh, whatever. We’ll figure it out later. Let’s go again.'”

Manziel credits family and friends for helping him get sober, including Drake, who he said “rides for me as hard as anyone in my life.”

“My relationship with Drake changed my life for the better forever, to this day,” Manziel, 31, said. ‘A pillar of my life. And from the first day I met him, the first day we talked, our relationship has been pretty constant.”

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner last played in the NFL with the Browns in 2015 after being selected by the team in the first round of the 2014 draft. Along the way, he developed a reputation as a party animal and appeared to develop an extravagant ego. , even referring to himself as “Money Manziel.”

Manziel has since revealed that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but now says he is trying to stay sober amid his battles with mental health issues and addiction.

He also left his football career after unsuccessful stints in the Canadian Football League and AAF.
