According to event organizers, the performance, on the night of the Winter Whites Gala at Kensington Palace, was completely improvised.

Taylor gave a speech during the evening in which he mentioned the then Duke of Cambridge.

She said: ‘I’m Taylor, it’s a pleasure to meet you, especially under these circumstances. It’s the first time I’ve played at Kensington Palace or any other palace.

‘I have to thank you, Prince William, for inviting me. It’s amazing.

‘To draw attention to this age group especially, teenagers and young adults.’

“When I sat down to watch Jon Bon Jovi do his performance, I thought, ‘That’s it. My work is done. I’ll have dinner in a minute and maybe I can chat with some people, and, you know, I’m a little out of order now.”

“I didn’t imagine what was going to happen next,” he adds. ‘I’m sitting next to Taylor Swift. She is to my left and after Jon sings her first song, there is a pause and she turns to me.

“He puts his hand on my arm, looks me in the eyes and says, ‘Come on, William. Let’s sing”.

‘To this day I still don’t know what happened to me. Honestly, even now I feel embarrassed by what happened next and I don’t understand why I gave in.
