Ian Wright and Roy Keane praised Angel Gomes as the former Manchester United man made his first debut for the Three Lions against Finland on Tuesday night.
England recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory in the UEFA Nations League with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in his 100th appearance in a first game back at Wembley since defeat in the Euro 2024 final.
Caretaker manager Lee Carsley guided the hosts to a second successive win that further strengthens his claim to land the job on a permanent basis as Gareth Southgate’s successor.
A very different side to England’s weekend win over Ireland in Dublin saw Carsley hand Lille midfielder Gomes a first start which then paid off as he played a decisive role in the match.
The 24-year-old, who previously came through the youth ranks at Manchester United and England before later moving to France, started alongside Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.

A stylish and controlled performance from both laid the groundwork for England’s victory, with Gomes impressing in carrying out both his attacking and defensive duties to such an extent that he was showered with praise afterwards.
Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright praised Gomes’ poise against Finland, telling ITV after the match: “Angel Gomes. There’s been talk about Jack (Grealish) and Trent (Alexander-Arnold).
“Seeing Gomes in that midfield, constantly moving. His touch on the ball.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was also enthusiastic about Gomes’ performances, describing the talented midfielder as “busy”.
Wright added: “He’s always available,” and Keane added: “There are great options. It will probably be a bit of a headache for him.”
Gomes had previously made just 10 first-team appearances at Old Trafford before deciding to leave his boyhood club after growing frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities.
He has since made a name for himself in France and was given a chance with England by Carsley after Gareth Southgate quit following the Euro 2024 final defeat to France.
