Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy has been selected No. 10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.
McCarthy, 21, led the Wolverines to a national championship last season under now-Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh.
He threw for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns against just four interceptions during his junior season.
The Vikings moved up from 11th overall to take the pick from the Jets and land their new quarterback.
According to ESPN Adam Schefterthe Vikings traded No. 11, a fourth-round pick and a fifth-round pick to New York for No. 10 and No. 203.
JJ McCarthy is seen at the NFL Combine in March. He was selected by Minnesota on Thursday.
McCarthy performs during the second half of the Rose Bowl in January against Alabama.
McCarthy was among the first-round prospects who opted to stay away from Detroit on Thursday night and celebrate at home.
He planned to be surrounded by 100 people, including family, friends from Illinois, teammates and staff from the football program, near the airport, which is about halfway between Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the draft site.
“I didn’t want to go to Detroit because I know it took a village to get here and I want to celebrate with them,” McCarthy told WXYZ-TV.
For Minnesota, the pick represents a new era at quarterback.
The Vikings were coached by Kirk Cousins for six seasons before he signed with the Falcons this offseason.
However, Cousins may have been surprised when his new team selected fellow quarterback Michael Penix Jr. No. 8 overall.
