An American expat living in Australia has called the suburbs Down Under

Lauren was excited to move from the United States to Australia and experience a new way of life, but despite the hype that comes with travelling abroad, there is one aspect of home she deeply misses.

The 28-year-old quickly realised that the videos and images she saw on social media romanticised the reality of living Down Under.

She said the beautiful sunsets she often admired in Arizona did not compare to the sunsets in Brisbane and called the city “very run down”.

“No one who dreams of moving to Australia talks about how hard it is to go from this… to this,” she wrote in a now-viral TikTok. video.

The short clip showed a sunset with orange and purple hues compared to Australia’s dreary grey sky at dusk.

“Yes, there are beautiful places in Australia and yes it is possible to find them and live there too,” Lauren wrote.

‘But they are not so common and most suburbs look like this: abandoned and dirty.

“I’m just posting this to show the reality of moving to Australia. It’s not always pretty or Instagram-worthy.”

An American expat living in Australia has called the suburbs Down Under “ramshackle and trashy” and said she has yet to see a beautiful sunset

In the comments, Lauren claimed she had “never seen” a beautiful sunset while in Australia.

“I’ve been all over the United States and to seven different countries, and while Australia definitely has some beautiful places, I wouldn’t say any part of it is ‘the most beautiful landmark I’ve ever seen,'” he said.

In his eyes, Brisbane on the east coast is “very run down” but he admitted he has never been to Western Australia, known for its glorious sunsets.

The short video quickly caught the attention of the masses and surpassed 1.5 million views, but opinions were divided.

Americans agreed that Arizona sunsets are incredible, while others encouraged Lauren to explore other parts of Australia.

“It’s not fair. You can’t compare Arizona sunsets to anything. There’s nothing like it,” commented one American.

“Finally someone said it,” another person wrote, and Lauren said, “It feels good to know I’m not alone. It’s been a tough transition.”

But dozens of Australians were outraged by his comments, adding that sunsets in Australia are often picturesque depending on the location.

“As an Australian, I’ve never seen a place like this,” one admitted, referring to the grey skies.

“Don’t lie, America is practically a third world country compared to Australia, honey,” wrote another.

Someone else said Lauren should “love him or leave him.”
