A police investigation is underway after a man’s body was recovered from the Yarra River, meters from the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.

The grim discovery was spotted in the water off Flinders Street’s Banana Alley district about 4pm on Tuesday.

The man’s body has not yet been formally identified.

Victoria Police are yet to determine the cause of death.

It is understood police may have been searching for a man who had attended a nightspot in the surrounding area and had not returned home in recent days, the Herald reported.

The area remained cordoned off Tuesday night as police and forensic officers searched the scene for possible evidence.

Police have collected security cameras from businesses along the riverbank as part of their investigations.
