The radio star has launched a scathing attack on Channel Seven’s Brownlow Medal coverage, criticising the broadcaster for failing to recognise that the night of football nights is about the vote, not the irrelevant entertainment.
Seven brought out the glitz and glamour of the red carpet in Melbourne on Monday night, with Carlton star Patrick Cripps taking home the illustrious award with a record 45 votes.
After three years of close finishes, it is the most emphatic victory since Brisbane Lions’ Lachie Neale won the first of his two Brownlows by 10 votes in the Covid-shortened 2020 season.
3AW breakfast presenter Ross Stevenson has taken issue with Brownlow coverage, insisting the event should focus more on the actual vote count.
“I tried to watch Brownlow last night but there was so much weird stuff,” he told co-host Russel Howcroft on Breakfast with Ross and Russ.
‘Wasn’t it much better when they just counted the votes?’
Stevenson went on to say that coverage should not mention the small list of players still in contention to win the award as the vote count progresses, because it “ruins” the event.
“This ruins the evening,” he explained.

‘It says, “These are the only people who can win. Don’t worry about anything else”… Just count the votes!’
The radio host claimed that the whole thing is overproduced.
“It’s the opposite of entertainment,” he said.
Stevenson was not the only football fan upset by the evening’s coverage; many complained about the welcome-to-the-country speech given before the ceremony began.
Fans took to social media to express their frustration with the speech, which recognises Australia’s indigenous heritage.
“Fuck me. Now the Brownlow Medal has a welcome home message! What a fucking joke!” raged one.

Another wrote: ‘I wonder how many people changed the channel when Welcome to Country came on.’
