WNBA fans were furious Friday night that the league did not air the league debuts of Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso with a preseason game for the Chicago Sky against the Minnesota Lynx.
Instead, the WNBA website had a link to stream Caitlin Clark’s league debut for the Indiana Fever against the Dallas Wings.
That forced fans to seek out live streams of fans at the game to see Reese and Cardoso’s first professional action.
One such a flow in It peaked at around 260,000 viewers and lasted almost two hours.
Fans expressed frustration on social media with the WNBA’s decisions, blaming the league for not being prepared to show both competitions.
Reese scored 13 points in her WNBA debut for the Chicago Sky against the Minnesota Lynx.
Caitlin Clark stood out in her professional debut with Indiana Fever
‘The WNBA is tremendously embarrassing. Not having games from Angel Reese and (Kamilla Cardoso) in the league is crazy. “Angel Reese is one of the reasons women’s basketball is getting so much attention but they made sure to put the white girl front and center, I’m tired of them,” said one fan on X.
‘Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese are making their professional debuts in preseason and no one thought it would be smart to broadcast it anywhere?!?!?! Plus (Teresa Weatherspoon) is making her debut as a head coach and still no one in power thought she would be smart. said another WNBA fan on social media.
‘The WNBA was not prepared for this moment in the slightest and it is a bit embarrassing considering they are not a new company where they have been around for over 20 years. Makes you wonder what else they’ve screwed up over the years. “That being said, as a basketball fan, I hope they resolve this soon because people are dying for the WNBA to have a moment, but as always, they are their own worst enemy,” said one fan on X.
‘The @WNBA is doing Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso so badly. The league is 80% black women, why don’t they show two of the most prolific young women in the draft? Whiteness caught them all. Fire whoever is making these stupid decisions,” said another WNBA fan on X.
A collection of social media messages from WNBA fans upset about having nowhere to see Reese
The WNBA is entering an unprecedented era for its league with many marketable young stars arriving at once, and Clark has most of those looks coming from the college game.
It was deserved that her game was broadcast on the home page of the WNBA website, but it left those who wanted to watch Lynx-Sky with nowhere to go.
The reason Chicago-Minnesota will not be broadcast is unclear and the league has not yet commented on the matter.
The Lynx defeated Sky 92-81, with Reese starting and scoring 13 points and Cardoso adding six points off the bench.
