Eddie McGuire will return to The Footy Show for a one-off episode, six years after he last fronted the show that helped make him and Sam Newman household names.

McGuire, who was the original host of the show with Newman, will host the show on the night of April 2 to celebrate Gather Round in South Australia.

The show will feature big names Nathan Brown, Billy Brownless, Tony Jones, Kane Cornes and Jimmy Bartel.

Pop star Delta Goodrem will also perform her new single Hearts on the Run live that night.

“I spent many weekends in SA cheering on my brother Trent when he played in the SANFL, and I can’t wait to cheer everyone on for the Gather Round,” Goodrem said.

The first Footy Show Grand Final Spectacular aired on Nine in 1993, before the weekday Footy Show was launched in 1994.

The show was a success and became the longest-running sports entertainment program in Australia with 735 episodes.

Eddie McGuire and Sam Newman left the show in 2018, and the show received a dramatic overhaul for 2019.

The show suffered a dramatic drop in ratings and Nine ceased production just eight episodes into the season.

“It’s been gone for 26 years, when we first started the show they told us we had six weeks to rate it and here we are 26 years later and we got 729 more episodes than anyone thought,” McGuire said in 2019.

The former Collingwood president said the show has been a “huge success” and he was proud of how it has transformed football over the years.

“Everything must pass, 26 years has been the longest running show in the history of sports entertainment,” McGuire said.

McGuire has said he is proud of how the program changed football over the years.

‘I’m not going to look back and be a fool about anything other than to say he’s been the biggest influence on my life. He gave me everything I’ve ever had in my life.

‘He gave me everything I had ever dreamed of. I love the show. I love what she did on television and I really have a great affinity and a great feeling for everyone who has ever been on the show.
