The Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series victory parade took place on Friday, two days after the team clinched its first championship since 2020 with a Game 5 victory over the New York Yankees.
The Dodgers did not lose a World Series game at home, with Freddie Freeman’s grand slam to win Game 1 and a 4-2 victory last Saturday in Game 2.
Los Angeles’ trip to Yankee Stadium saw the Dodgers all but guarantee their eighth championship in franchise history with a dominant victory in Game 3.
The Yankees were not swept, becoming one of four teams in baseball history and the first since 1970 to avoid a World Series sweep by losing the first three games of the series.
New York was unable to make history and force the series back to Los Angeles for a Game 6, blowing a 5-run lead in Game 5 to give the Dodgers the championship victory.
Many in Los Angeles waited hours to see the Dodgers’ World Series victory parade.
Fans lined the streets of Los Angeles for their first World Series parade since 1988.
It is the second consecutive season in which the World Series lasted five games, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by the same margin in last season’s World Series.
The parade will feature Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freeman, who was the Most Valuable Player of the World Series, among the rest of the Dodgers roster and coaching staff.
This is the Dodgers’ first true championship parade since 1988 because their 2020 victory took place during the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 100,000 Dodger fans are expected to attend the parade.
Many fans dressed in Dodger gear including pennants, belts, caps and shoes.
The Dodgers won the World Series on Wednesday with a Game 5 victory over the Yankees.
The Dodgers also won the 2020 World Series but did not get a parade due to the pandemic
Fans can expect to see Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and more at the parade.
Dodgers fans also paid tribute to team legend Fernando Valenzuela, who died last month.
Friday’s parade began around 11 a.m. in Los Angeles and will end at Dodger Stadium.
The parade will begin at mid-morning in the Gloria Molina Grand Park in front of City Hall with the presence of Mayor Karen Bass. It will continue on a 45-minute route that culminates at the intersection of 5th and Flower streets, with the Dodgers traveling atop double-decker buses.
The celebration at Dodger Stadium will begin shortly after noon. The parade will be broadcast on the stadium’s video screens prior to the team’s arrival.
The team said that due to logistics, traffic and schedules, fans will not be able to attend both events. People dressed in blue Dodger uniforms began gathering on downtown streets hours in advance.
A portion of the proceeds from the ticketed stadium event will be donated to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.
There were more than a dozen arrests during informal celebrations after the team’s comeback to win the Series. Theft, vandalism and fires occurred in some areas of the city.
