Being Julia Roberts’ second candidate was not without its drawbacks for Dermot Mulroney.
The 60-year-old My Best Friend’s Wedding star admitted TMZ who didn’t work for a year after the hit 1997 romantic comedy, and blamed the film’s poster.
“I was sitting there, ready to get the gift with purchase that was supposed to come along with being in a popular movie, and instead I probably didn’t work for a year,” Mulroney revealed.
My Best Friend’s Wedding premiered on June 20, 1997 at number 2 at the box office after Batman and Robin, grossing $127 million against a budget of $38 million.

“I thought, Oh my God, guys, if they had made me a little bigger, maybe I could have gotten a job,” Mulroney added.
The film starred Roberts, 56, as food critic Jules, who once made a promise to her best friend Michael (Mulroney) that they would get married if they were both single before they were 28.
When he tells her that he will be marrying his new love Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) in four days, Jules sets out to sabotage the wedding.
The poster for My Best Friend’s Wedding showed Roberts on a wedding cake with bride and groom toppers showing the faces of Diaz, 51, and Mulroney.
Mulroney finally bounced back with 1999’s Goodbye Lover, starring alongside Patricia Arquette, Don Johnson, Ellen DeGeneres and Mary-Louise Parker.
The actor has continued his romantic comedy career with titles such as The Wedding Date, Must Love Dogs (both 2005) and, most recently, last year’s Everyone But You with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.
The film also reunited Mulroney with My Best Friend’s Wedding co-star Rachel Griffiths.

“I liked those obvious elements, but he had his own little story. He was a sports journalist and he was in love in ways that many people still argue with me about.
