Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana’s loan deal to AEK Athens has failed.

The 21-year-old had been set to join the Greek side on a season-long loan which would have also included the option of a permanent transfer for £20m.

The clubs remain at odds on several points and time is running out to salvage the deal with the Greek transfer window about to close.

Fofana, who has been capped by Ivory Coast at senior level, joined Chelsea in January 2023 but is not part of manager Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Chelsea had been looking to secure the signing of Fofana to further reduce the club’s already massive player pool.

Ben Chilwell is another player the Blues are looking to move on, with Deivid Washington, Alex Matos and Harvey Vale still available for sale or loan.

Chelsea have offloaded 40 players during a hectic summer, including Thiago Silva, Romelu Lukaku, Conor Gallagher and Kepa Arrizabalaga, among others, while Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal on loan.
