Armed offenders allegedly got out of a car and approached the teenager in an alley before attacking him.
The teenager suffered stab wounds to his hand and upper body.
He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries, while the suspects fled the scene by car before police arrived.
Photographs from the scene show blood-soaked clothing was found on a nearby footpath.
A Victoria Police spokesman did not say whether a finger was found at the scene.
A severed finger has been found in a car park following a suspected stabbing attack which left a teenager in a critical condition.
It was previously reported that the knife-wielding attackers filmed their teenage victim as he lay bleeding on the ground unconscious while a heroic, blood-soaked Good Samaritan tried to save his life.
The man who rushed to the aid of the stabbed boy said the attackers stood mercilessly and watched the victim bleed on the concrete, with some filming the horrific scene on their phones and only one offering help to the fallen teenager.
The man told the Herald Sun he feared the boy would die as he desperately held his head off the ground.
“He was in and out of consciousness throughout the whole process, I was just trying to keep him awake and alive,” the man said.
‘From the injuries I saw, (the weapon) was something large, it was not a kitchen knife or a household knife, it was definitely something like a machete.
‘There was blood everywhere, especially on me.
“I saw many people standing around, there were many who were not helping except for one person.”

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
