A British aeronautical engineer died this morning after falling through a sliding glass door in a freak accident in Thailand.

Gareth Wilson, 53, from Staines, Surrey, was fatally injured at his home in an upmarket housing estate in Pattaya, on Thailand’s south coast.

The aeronautics specialist is said to have lost his balance on the bathroom tiles and crashed into the sliding glass door of the toilet.

Although he suffered fatal injuries as a result of the accident, he managed to stagger back to bed as his frantic wife called an ambulance. But it wasn’t long before he succumbed to his injuries.

Gareth’s devastated wife Lek Wilson today said she was in shock after the death.

She said: “I have just finished speaking with the police. I can’t believe what happened, I’m in shock. Gareth was so strong and healthy. He was everything to me.

Lieutenant Colonel Surasing Sukmak of Huay Yai police station said officers received a report at 7:10 a.m.

Police arrived at the one-storey house in the upscale neighborhood to find Gareth’s family distraught over the accident.

Speaking today, the officer said: “There were four people in the house when the incident happened. They were husband, wife, their daughters.

“The room where this happened was the husband and wife’s shared bedroom.

“A security camera in the middle of the house recorded a very loud sound of glass breaking around 6:30 a.m.

“The man’s wife ran and told their daughter who was staying in another room to help her father who fell on the shards of the glass door.

“The blood was concentrated in one place. No suspicious items were found. We’re sure it was clear that he died when he fell on the glass.

“The deceased was a tall man, so it would have been easy for a man of his size to force open the glass door.

“His family said he suffered from a congenital heart condition.”

Investigators said there were no signs of a fight in the room. They waited for the family to calm down before proceeding with the interrogations.

Meanwhile, Gareth’s body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The Briton is listed as a full-time base engineer at PHI Aviation in Lafayette, Louisiana.

He was also a handicapped golfer, ranked 1,297 nationally in Thailand.
