An Australian trader who held a sign warning of an impending speed camera on the side of a road has been hailed as a “legend” by drivers in his area.
The man was photographed wearing a bright orange vest and holding a sign reading “Beware of Camera” in Werribee, west of Melbourne, over the weekend.
He earned praise from dozens of drivers after a photo of him standing on the side of the Princess Highway near Sneydes Road was shared on social media.
“With a serious expression, he waves to passing cars and his silent gesture offers a warning to other drivers,” the photo said.
“Whether seen as a useful warning or a controversial act, its presence adds an interesting dynamic to the daily commute.”
Several people quickly identified the man as ‘Darryl’ and revealed that this was not the first time he had brought out the homemade sign.
“He’s actually a shopkeeper in the city… fed up with being fined just for traveling 3 more kilometers,” said one.
“There’s a bloody Aussie legend right there,” wrote a second.
A Melbourne man (pictured) who held up a warning sign to spare Princes Highway drivers a possible speeding fine has been heralded as a “legend” on social media.
“God’s work,” agreed a third.
‘He needs a beer or 10 with a mate,’ another admirer wrote.
“We have all been fined for traveling 3 or 4 kilometers in an unmarked car… GOOD FOR HIM,” said another.
Some said the man’s signal was more effective in stopping people from speeding than mobile speed cameras or fines.
“Honestly, it’s as useful as speed cameras for slowing people down,” one of them said.
