A woman was criticised for making an innocent mistake when receiving the bill: ‘I couldn’t pay it’

An American woman who had been on a nice date arranged by a mutual friend was shocked to learn that her date had called her

A young woman was dumped when a potential suitor abused her for paying for her own meal on a first date.

The woman said she had met the man through a friend and thought the date had gone so well that they would have another one.

But he was far less pleased with the experience, later complaining to friends that she split the bill at the expensive restaurant.

“It’s a nice place and I was planning to go, I figured if worst came to worst I’d get a chance to try the food,” the woman wrote on Reddit.

“We actually had a great time. I ordered drinks, appetizers, main course and dessert. He only ordered water and main course,” she explained.

Once the meal was over, he asked for a separate bill, as he has a policy of always paying his share on first dates.

“The first thing I want to say is that I thought it went well. He seemed like a genuine, nice guy and I was looking forward to seeing him again,” she said.

But the man returned to his friends and told them he was upset that they had only ordered one dish, knowing that he would have to pay the entire bill.

“He thought I was some kind of idiot for not telling him I would pay for my own food,” she said.

‘The reason I only had water and a main tap was because I thought I was going to pay a lot of money for food and drinks.’

The young woman took to social media to ask whether she should have told him she would pay for her own trip.

But most people agreed with her, saying the man got himself into this trouble by choosing a restaurant he couldn’t afford, instead of meeting her for coffee, as she initially suggested.

“It was something he brought on himself. He wanted to have dinner and he didn’t have enough money to pay for it,” one man said.

“All first dates should be half-assed… but always pick a place you can afford if you have to foot the whole bill. The guy was a jerk,” she added.

Others said it was common to feel awkward about paying for a meal on a first date.

“Would it have been better to specify in advance who was going to pay? Sure… but it’s completely normal to suddenly realize that you had different expectations about who was going to pay,” one woman said.

“There’s nothing wrong with you assuming you’d split the costs. For him to think you’re a ‘jerk’… that’s absurd. It strongly suggests to me that there shouldn’t be a second date,” she added.

People also accused the man of being more interested in the restaurant than in her.

“This suggests that the missed opportunity to eat was more important than the date itself,” one woman said.

While others didn’t judge him for being upset about the lost food.

“Yes, it’s okay to feel discouraged, but swearing is too much,” one woman said.

Others said he deserved a second chance.

“The guy might have been hungry and nervous about making a wrong move because he really likes her,” one person said.
