A van was split in two in a crash in western Sydney that initially left police baffled because no one was at the scene.

The van crashed on Kurmond Road near Meadows Road in Kurmond, a small town 70 kilometres west of the city, at about 1 a.m. on Thursday.

Police said that when they arrived, the driver had already left the scene.

About two hours later, the 28-year-old man was found in a forest about 1.5 km from the accident site.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him for a broken collarbone and lacerations.

The man was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition where he will undergo mandatory tests.
