A British diver has died off the coast of Lanzarote.

The 59-year-old man was assisted by emergency medical services after getting into difficulty in a small sandy cove called Playa Chica in the tourist resort of Puerto del Carmen.

They attempted to revive him after pulling him out of the water and discovered that he had suffered cardiac arrest.

But they could not save him and he was declared dead at the scene.

The alarm was raised at 12:30 yesterday at Playa Chica, the southernmost beach in Puerto del Carmen, famous for its incredible snorkelling activities.

A spokesman for the regional government’s emergency response coordination centre said overnight: ‘A 59-year-old diver has died following an incident at Playa Chica in the municipality of Tías.

‘We started receiving calls just after 12.30 yesterday.

Callers said a diver who was unconscious and in need of emergency medical assistance had been rescued from the water.

‘Emergency services discovered he was in cardiac arrest when they arrived at the scene and performed CPR without positive results.

‘He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Civil Guard is preparing a report on what happened.

The local police and firefighters were also mobilized.

In February last year, a 63-year-old British diver died off the coast of Tenerife.

The tragedy occurred near a beach in the municipality of Fasnia, in the east of Tenerife.

The 60-year-old man is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest at Playa Flamingo in the south of the island.

It is believed that a lifeguard tried to help the unnamed Briton when he saw he was in difficulty, but was unable to do anything to save his life.

Enrique Espinosa, manager of the Lanzarote Safety and Emergency Consortium, said at the time: ‘I had all the necessary permits to dive, but diving is a high-risk sport and anything that goes wrong can be fatal.

‘He suffered cardiac arrest on arrival and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.’

Police sources said the British man had “health problems”.

In February 2019, a British man died during a dive off the coast of Tenerife, where he was celebrating his 32nd wedding anniversary with his wife Lesley.

Andrew Littler, from Coalville, Leicester, was declared dead after the alarm was raised when he suffered cardiac arrest following unsuccessful attempts to revive him on a pier in the quiet resort of Abbots in the south-east of the sunny island.

News of the tragedy emerged when friends organized a GoFundMe campaign to help repatriate the body of the transporter driver.
