An aerial assassin is suspected of having arrived from abroad on a mafia-sanctioned mission to kill a successful greengrocer in a brutal gangland execution.
John Latorre, 64, was shot dead outside his home in Greenvale, in Melbourne’s north, as he walked to work early Tuesday morning.
His family was awakened by the gunshots and found his body lying in the driveway. Nearly a week later, Mr. Latorre’s killer is still at large.
Underworld sources believe the execution was so well planned that it had to have “100 percent” approval by the highest levels of mafia leadership.
Mr. Latorre was reportedly a discreet but influential member of the ‘Ndrangheta, a powerful mafia organization in Calabria, southern Italy.

Doyne Caspersz (pictured) and his wife Marlene were found dead at their home in Warrandyte, on a street known as ‘Millionaire’s Row’.
“It was smooth… cool, calm and calculating,” a source told the Sun Herald.
“It’s professional work. There aren’t many people who can achieve this.
“They wouldn’t have done it without insurance. It’s a big job.
The source added that many did not see Mr Latorre’s murder coming, which he described as a “huge shock”.
He added that the possibility of retaliation was unlikely.
Another theory circulating the underworld is that a botched “black flight” cocaine importation in 2020 to Queensland could be a factor behind the murder.

Mr. Latorre was suspected of having played a key role in this botched importation which caused heavy losses to investors.
He was known to visit his friend and international drug trafficker Frank Madafferi, but did not have a significant criminal record.
Mr. Latorre was shot multiple times in the driveway of his Buchanan Place home around 4:30 a.m. last Tuesday.
He was heading to the Melbourne market at Epping, where he ran a successful fruit and vegetable business.
Shocked friends and family rushed to the scene where John Latorre was gunned down in his Greenvale driveway last Tuesday morning.
A source close to Mr Latorre said he had not felt any threat to his life before his death.
“There is no indication that his life is threatened,” they said last week.
Homicide detectives are still investigating whether the shooting was linked to organized crime.
“There is nothing to suggest retaliation at this stage,” Detective Senior Sergeant Danny Travaglini told reporters last Tuesday.
“However, you also need to understand that if there are links to organized crime, there is a risk of retaliation.”
Homicide detectives collected CCTV cameras and limited their investigations to a four-hour window between 2am and 6am in their quest to find Mr Latorre’s killer.
