Khloe Kardashian’s ex Tristan Thompson has officially become the legal guardian of his disabled brother Amari, 17.
Tristan was granted temporary legal guardianship of Amari in September 2023, eight months after the shocking death of his mother Andrea from a heart attack at just 53 years old.
Now, a court has approved making it permanent, according to a ruling Monday. TMZ reports.
Amari has been confined to a wheelchair due to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a particularly acute type of epilepsy that has required him to receive constant care.
Thompson, 32, filed a petition earlier this month to become Amari’s sole legal guardian and conservator and said he had been unable to locate him and Amari’s father, Trevor Thompson, according to documents obtained by Entertainment tonight.
Trevor was ordered to pay child support when Andrea assumed sole legal guardianship of Amari in 2014.
Khloe Kardashian’s ex Tristan Thompson is officially named legal guardian and conservator of disabled brother Amari, 17 to 13 months after the death of their mother Andrea.
Tristan was granted temporary legal guardianship of Amari in September 2023, eight months after his mother Andrea’s shocking death from a heart attack at age 53 (shown in a July episode of The Kardashians with Amari).
The documents say: ‘Trevor Douglas Thompson has since effectively vacated the proposed ward; He did not pay any child support despite the court order and has not been in contact with the proposed conservatorship or Andrea Marie Brooks since July 2014.
“He has done nothing to support or improve the proposed ward since then and has waived all rights to have a say in the proposed ward’s care.”
‘I have not had any contact with him since his separation from our late mother in 2014, and contact was minimal before then.
‘My only contact with Trevor Thompson in the last nine years was a brief interaction when he turned up at my mother’s funeral. I have no knowledge of his current or recent whereabouts.
Tristan says he hired legal experts to try to locate his father, “but they were unable to obtain any information regarding Trevor’s current location or other relevant details.”
Tristan is now seeking to become his brother’s legal guardian so he can “manage his finances and healthcare.”
Amari is a Canadian citizen, but has been living and receiving medical care in California. Both Tristan and Amari moved in with Kardashian after Andrea’s death.
In the third season finale of The Kardashians it was revealed that Khloe Kardashian, Tristan’s ex, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner flew to Toronto with Tristan on Kim’s private jet, and that Tristan and Amari moved in with Khloe.
Tristan further states in documents: ‘If Amari is required to return to Canada, there are no relatives there who have the ability or means to support Amari, and he cannot be provided with the level of care and support he receives in the United States while in my custody.
‘[I want] “To ensure Amari continues to have a happy and fulfilling life and to provide her with the best possible care.”
In September, Tristan said in court documents that he “has been providing care, maintenance and support to Amari” in the difficult nine months since his mother’s death, The Blast reported.
On September 20, a judge granted Tristan’s request for temporary guardianship and scheduled a hearing on permanent guardianship for November, according to an article in TMZ.
Thompson was not present in court during the hearing, but was represented by his attorney via Zoom. (The basketball player resigned last month from the Cleveland Cavaliers, the team for which he has played most of his career.)
Thompson’s request was not contested and Amari’s father, Trevor Douglas Thompson, was not served with notice of the proceedings because his whereabouts are unknown, TMZ previously reported.
Trevor Thompson “has been actively absent from Amari’s life since” July 2014, when his late mother “was awarded sole custody of Amari and a support order against her,” Tristan told the court in his petition, according to The Blast .
Tristan, who previously played for the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics and Sacramento Kings, said Trevor Thompson “has never fulfilled any of his support obligations toward Amari and has been actively avoiding them.”
Tristan told the court that Trevor Thompson “has done nothing to support or raise ‘Amari’ and has waived all rights to have a say in ‘her future care.’
Tristan said Amari “has medical diagnoses that render him unable to provide basic care for himself and requires a guardian to provide that care and take him to medical appointments.”
Khloe and her family members have rallied behind Tristan to help care for her younger brother and provide him with shelter, care, and other needs.
Amari will also receive $103,475 due to Andrea’s death, and Tristan, as guardian, can protect her assets, TMZ previously reported.
Tristan said in legal documents that a guardian “is also necessary to protect Amari’s estate from loss or damage.”
Tristan said in his petition that “appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and meeting his basic needs.”
