Carlton Cole has told how a withering Jose Mourinho denied him a Premier League winners’ medal in 2005/06, and how he wanted to jump into the crowd when the Chelsea manager threw one at him.
The former Blues forward also recalled Mourinho’s brutal 20-minute personal “spree” after a defeat in which he did not play.
Cole made nine Premier League appearances as Chelsea claimed a second successive title, one short of the requirement for a medal.
He only played one match from February to the end of April, so even though he played in both matches after they won the title, he was still one match away from winning a medal.
“I had to play two (one) more games to get a medal and he didn’t because he was still doing the wrong things off the field,” Cole told Des Kelly on the new Hayters TV show. Football Lives Podcast.

‘I hadn’t learned my lesson. Then he scolded me like that.
‘That one he threw into the crowd, I saw him move through the crowd in slow motion, man. It was going to be Michael Jordan and he was just going to jump in and get that. He wanted to jump, he would have jumped into the crowd and gotten it.
“It was surprising because when that happened, I realized that he doesn’t care, he knows I haven’t done enough to be rewarded because he gave Robert Huth the games at the end of the season. He gave some other players the games. games they needed. But I was the only one left on the bench.
‘I remember we were in Newcastle in one of the last games. We had won the league three games before or something like that. And I was thinking, “just give me a minute, two minutes, just give me something so I can get some times!”
And I knew why he didn’t. He didn’t want me to be involved in that. I took it on the chin and grew from it.’
Cole’s recollection of the events is not exactly irrefutable. Chelsea had only won the title two games before Newcastle, a 3-0 victory over Manchester United, and he came on as a substitute against the Magpies.
But the general theme remains. He only played three games starting in February, frozen in a season in which he did not score a single goal in the league. That summer he joined West Ham.
Cole, 40, also recounts a particularly brutal reprimand from Mourinho after a defeat in which he did not even play.
Cole also claims that Mourinho told him he would work at ‘Tesco’ in a harsh reproach after a defeat in which he did not play
He said: ‘We We always had a meeting before going out to train. She told us what we were going to do, what we were going to do, recapitulating what happened before.
But this particular meeting was not good for me. I just walked in. I knew he was fine that weekend, he hadn’t gone out or done anything wrong.
‘There’s all this talk about what happened at the game the day before (usually), that was non-existent!
“It was all about Carlton Cole not being good enough, and his performance, and ‘you’re going to work at Tesco if you don’t stick your finger out’, I don’t know why I said Tesco, I could have done it. Although Sainsbury’s didn’t have the Co-op in back then. Definitely not Waitrose, that was too glamorous! Definitely not M&S, that was too much. There was no Aldis back then.
‘It was a shock. It was only my fault. He was spanking me for at least 10 minutes. I thought, “Wow, this is too much,” because he wasn’t even involved in the team! I didn’t even travel, so why am I involved in this conversation? Talk to your players that you took! I always remember that. Even the other players were like, “Wow, he’s targeting you.” He hadn’t even done anything wrong!
‘In fact I took it into account and reacted. The way I reacted was very good because I went out to train and had one of the best training sessions of my life. Because I was so angry, I felt hurt and that motivated me. He brought out the best in me. I don’t know if he meant it, but if he did, it was great.
