A photo of two “reserved” picnic tables at a popular beach has sparked intense debate, with some calling it “un-Australian”.
The image showed a park shelter with two picnic tables covered by a tablecloth at Brontë Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
One picnic table also had a backpack on it and the other had a full shopping bag, but there was no one in sight.
“What do you think about people reserving picnic tables at Brontë Beach in the morning on weekends?” one Reddit user posted.

Commentators expressed their anger, calling the move “the height of selfishness.”
‘Is not acceptable. You can reserve it by sitting there yourself, but not leaving an item,” one person wrote.
Another said: “This happens a lot over Christmas – people take their New Year’s Eve holiday on the beaches early in the morning and don’t return until after lunch.”
But some responded to the outrage.
“Give them a break – it’s hard work trying to organize a psycho child’s birthday party,” said one.
Many Australian councils allow residents to reserve seating areas, such as picnic tables, for private parties and gatherings.
However, most town halls have a “first come, best dressed” rule, and local residents are often forced to arrive early to claim their table.
A Waverley Council spokesperson said news.com.au They ask people not to reserve their places.
Tables and barbecues in Australian parks can be hot commodities, and people arrive early so as not to miss out on the best locations.
“Overall, we find that people use our public places fairly and that there is room for everyone to enjoy our parks and reserves,” they said.
‘At weekends and other peak times, picnic tables and barbecues invariably fill up, so we ask people to share our spaces so everyone can have a turn.
“Waverley is the second most densely populated local government area in Australia after the city of Sydney, and we attract millions of visitors each year, so our recreational spaces are in short supply.”
The council urges residents to have a back-up plan if they discover someone else is using picnic shelters, tables or barbecues.
We ask people to refrain from reserving tables and to always have a back-up plan if picnic or barbecue shelters are already being used.’
