a ‘Tutari’ player said they had previously been called for election rallies of all political parties.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra):

Now the NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar has been assigned the ‘man blowing’ mission tutari‘ as an election symbol, the players of this traditional instrument fear that they will lose business this year if the general elections and the wedding season coincide.

They fear that since the model guidance code is in effect, they may not be hired to play.tutary‘ at weddings or other events this year.

‘Tutari’, a crescent-shaped or C-shaped instrument, is played on certain occasions as a sign of welcome. In the past it was played to announce the arrival of kings.

Speaking to PTI, Jaisingh Holiye, who deals with services ‘tutari’ players for functions here, said it is a traditional instrument and is played during wedding ceremonies and other events.

“But this year, the Lok Sabha elections and the wedding season coincide. We are worried that we will lose business,” he said.

Baburao Gurav, an’tutari’ player living in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar town said, “Political parties have made various election symbols from objects or items used in our daily lives. We cannot avoid those things. But we are not sure where a ‘tutari’ should be played at weddings and other family events because of its association with a prominent political party.”

‘So it is possible that we lose turnover at political events. Tutari players are generally called by all political parties at election rallies. But since our musical instrument has now become a symbol of one political party, we fear that we will lose orders from political parties. Now that the model code of conduct is in place, people may also think about not calling us for cultural and family events,” he said.

There is no clarity about the places where the games should take place, Gurav said.

“When both parties in wedding ceremonies are ready, we will play. If anyone objects, we will stop playing the instrument,” he said.

The NCP split in July 2022 after a group of party leaders led by Baramati MLA Ajit Pawar, nephew of party founder Sharad Pawar, joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government. The Election Commission later recognized the Ajit Pawar faction as the real NCP and awarded it the bell symbol. The Sharad Pawar-led camp got the poll symbol of ‘man who plays’ tutari‘ and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) as the name.
