Top 5 TV Deals
Hisense’s U8N (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is the brightest TV we’ve ever tested—I mean, put on your sunglasses and open all the windows in broad daylight, thanks to its ultra-powerful mini LED panel. That’s all well and good, but what really makes this TV a hit is that it pairs that brightness with fantastic black levels and contrast, with almost no visible glow effect around bright objects, along with punchy quantum dot colors. You’ll also get a 120Hz panel and top-notch gaming features for the fastest action, an intuitive Google TV interface, and plenty of other features. It does have some flaws, like a mediocre off-axis display and motion handling, but at this price, it’s hard to say no to one of our favorite TVs of the year so far.
TCL’s 2023 Q7 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is one of our favorite affordable TVs, offering a spectacular combination of bright, colorful picture performance and a wealth of features for the price. Its bright display is equipped with quantum dots for expansive colors and a 120Hz refresh rate for sports and gaming. Modern gaming features like VRR (variable refresh rate) allow the TV to sync perfectly with high frame rate games for smooth, tear-free performance. Unlike some rivals, the Q7 doesn’t offer mini LEDs for premium contrast control, but its hundreds of dimming zones and solid image processing combine for deep black levels and good contrast. Whether you’re gaming in a sunny room or watching noir movies in the dark, this TV is up to the challenge and keeps your budget intact.
LG’s C3 TV (9/10, WIRED Recommends) is once again my top contender for best price-to-picture ratio. As one of the best TVs we reviewed last year, this handsome OLED delivers a striking combination of eye-popping brightness, vivid clarity, and incredibly lifelike colors to blow away everything you watch. Though it’s LG’s low-end model, the C3 includes premium features like a quad-pack of HDMI 2.1 ports with top-of-the-line gaming tech, LG’s speedy (if sometimes cranky) webOS interface, and a sleek yet understated design. The C3 isn’t quite as bright as LG’s G-Series flagship, but it offers most of the best of the high-end at a more affordable price. That means more money left over for a great soundbar or, better yet, a good pair of bookshelf speakers. What? Did you think I was going to recommend a mutual fund or something?
Roku’s budget-range Plus Series QLED TV has plenty going for it, but its best feature is the Roku-based operating system that runs it. Roku makes everything simple, from setup to finding your favorite streaming apps and even summoning the remote from under the satellite dish. (How did it get to that?) The Plus Series offers good brightness, solid contrast, and expansive quantum dot colors, all at a surprisingly low entry price. The TV’s biggest drawback is its 60Hz panel and lack of advanced gaming features, making it best for those who primarily watch TV and movies. If you want a performance boost, Roku sells the Pro Series (also on sale)offering gaming extras and better overall performance. Otherwise, the Plus Series is an ideal choice for TV newbies looking to get into the world of 4K HDR without spending a fortune.
Samsung’s long-awaited return to OLED TVs was a boon for the industry, with the bold and beautiful S95 QD-OLED series. It turns out that adding the colorful sparkle of quantum dot technology to the glorious contrast and perfect black levels of OLED was a very good idea. The S95C is the second edition of Samsung’s new venture into OLED, and it’s a flagship model worth celebrating. You’ll get fantastic brightness and colors, glorious contrast, wide viewing angles, and top-notch motion handling from the TV’s 120Hz panel. Like all Samsung TVs, it skips Dolby Vision HDR, and I’m not a huge fan of its Tizen smart system, but those are the only notable weak points. In addition to the fantastic picture, you’ll get near-full gaming features in Samsung’s Gaming Hub, a solar-powered remote, and a sleek, versatile design. While the new S95D is brighter, it’s currently more expensive and has a new type of anti-glare display that has its own quirks. If you’re looking for one of the best TVs you can buy, the S95C is a great option at a great price.
