A rising political star and three-time mayor was found dead in her home at age 45.
Victoria Police confirmed the death of 45-year-old Sarah Carter on Tuesday.
He said her death is not being treated as suspicious.
She was a prominent member of the Australian Labor Party and was elected Mayor of Maribyrnong, a suburb in Melbourne’s west, three times: in 2011, 2020 and 2022.
Ms Carter was also a “passionate advocate” for the arts, driving programmes such as the Creative West project, formerly known as NeXT, and Festival City.
The cause of Mrs. Carter’s death is not yet known.
Ms Carter had returned from her holiday in the “remote communities of Santo and Malekula islands in Vanuatu” earlier this week.
“Vanuatu is recognised as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the impacts of climate change and disasters and we were able to witness first-hand the impact of resilience and adaptation initiatives benefiting communities through Australia’s bilateral and multilateral development programs,” he said of the trip.
More to come.
