Richard Keys has again taken aim at Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, but stating that Liverpool have “dodged a bullet” by not having the Spaniard as their next coach.

Alonso announced on Friday his intention to remain at the Bundesliga club, which looks set to win its first league title this season.

The former midfielder has been linked with positions at Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Liverpool, as well as possible vacancies at Manchester United and Real Madrid.

However, after deciding to stay at Leverkusen, TV presenter Keys branded it a “bottle job”, and speaking on beIN SPORTS on Sunday, he continued to criticize Alonso and his decision.

After Jason McAteer expressed his opinion that something could be going on behind the scenes with Madrid, Keys doubled down on his opinion by claiming that Liverpool have “dodged a bullet” by not naming Alonso.

Keys has repeatedly referred to Bayer Leverkusen as ‘Leicester-kusen’ in comparison to Leicester’s shock Premier League victory in 2015-16, and believes the club would be unable to repeat their achievements under Alonso next season.

Following Keys’ latest speech against the former Liverpool star, the panel speculated that his next move could be Real Madrid, another of Alonso’s former clubs, but only after the end of next season.

Leverkusen are now 13 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga following Bayern Munich’s defeat to Borussia Dortmund and are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season.

Following Alonso’s decision to stay in Germany with his current club, Liverpool will now shift their attention elsewhere with Sporting’s Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi in the frame.
