Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso had been seen as his number one target, but the former Spanish midfielder announced on Friday his intention to remain in his position for next season.

The report claims that the Italian is highly regarded by the Bayern management, with Max Eberl, who was appointed sporting director of the club in February, being a big admirer.

It is claimed that Eberl has already sounded out whether De Zerbi would be interested in moving this summer.

However, Bayern could face a battle with Liverpool for the Italian’s services, with the Reds also interested in the Brighton boss, although Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorin is the current favorite for the position at Anfield.

De Zerbi has impressed since moving to England in September 2022, guiding Brighton to sixth place last season and to Europe for the first time in the club’s history.

He had previously earned praise for his work in charge of teams such as Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Having been linked with several roles in recent times, De Zerbi, who is believed to have a release clause in his contract, has been relatively open in answers about his future.

Speaking about his plans ahead of Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, he said: “I I want to talk to my club, I have a contract, but the problem is not the contract, the problem is finding the same plan, the same objective, the same vision for the future.

Meanwhile, Bayern’s attempts to replace Tuchel are proving problematic, with another target, Sebastian Hoeness, recently signing a new contract at Stuttgart after a good season.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso had been seen as Bayern's number one target, but the former Spanish midfielder announced on Friday his intention to remain in his role for next season.

Elsewhere, the report claims that former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as a surprising candidate to return to the club just over a year after being sacked.

The Times reports that many at Bayern acknowledge it was a premature decision to sack the 36-year-old last March, given the club’s subsequent struggles under Tuchel.

Another candidate in the running on a shortlist of three is former Man United caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick, who has rejuvenated his coaching career with Austria since that difficult spell at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the Times also reports that whoever replaces Tuchel will be tasked with revamping the squad as the Bavarian giants aim to hit back next season.
