Wild images of a violent altercation between a postman and a cyclist on the side of the road have divided Australians over who was really in the wrong.

Codey Lamos saw the two men fighting underneath his apartment building on Old Coach Road in Mudgeeraba, on the Gold Coast, about midday on Friday.

Mr. Lamos said Daily Mail Australia believes a punch to the postman’s side mirror sparked the violence, but it was the postman who started it.

“I heard my old mate (the cyclist) say that he had been cut up and something had been thrown in his face,” he recalled.

“So (the cyclist) followed the mailman to the complex and that’s what I captured.”

Lamos understands that a projectile was allegedly thrown at the cyclists’ faces, causing them to bleed moments before the confrontation.

In the images you can see a cyclist with his lycra almost unbuttoned approaching the side of a mail van and hitting the mirror.

The postman then jumped out of the driver’s seat and ran towards him.

The cyclist then raised his fists, unleashing a string of expletives and inviting the driver to “try.”

As the mailman attempted to return to his truck, the cyclist attempted to close the door on his legs, causing the driver to exit the vehicle.

The men continued to exchange blows, and at one point the courier threw his scanner at the man before finally admitting defeat.

When the postman got back into his car, the cyclist closed the door again, but this time he left.

Australians were divided over who was to blame for siding with the cyclist.

“Half the drivers don’t look or care what they’re doing. The other day one stood in front of me while I was on the phone, with my grandkids in the car. He didn’t give a damn,” one woman wrote.

However, others jumped to defend the email.

‘Cyclists always make mistakes. Although the law says they are always right,” said one person.

‘I know the postman came out victorious, but I still feel bad for him. “No one should be treated like this at work,” one wrote.

“Postie is torn between losing his job or losing his temper,” a third shared.

“Imagine if you were waiting all day for a delivery and this was the reason you didn’t receive your package,” a fourth joked.

Queensland Police said they were not aware of the incident.
