Mt Beauty Airport: Two people dead after plane crashes at picturesque rural airport

A plane crashed at a picturesque rural airport, killing two people on board.

Ambulances and other emergency services were called to Mount Beauty Airport in northeast Victoria about 1.40pm on Saturday.

There are conflicting reports as to whether it is an airplane or a powered glider.

Two planes have crashed in Victoria’s northern alpine region at Mt Beauty, leaving two people injured.

The pair are believed to have been flying over Embankment Drive when the plane crashed around 1:45 p.m.

The pilot and passenger, not yet formally identified, died at the scene.

Both were the only occupants of the plane.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The country’s Fire Authority reported that it received multiple calls about the incident and its crews were able to provide first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene.

Previously, Mount Beauty Airport was the scene of the tragic death of Matthew Farrell, a pilot who crashed a small plane into dense bush shortly after takeoff in September 2022.

An investigation found that at the time of the accident other pilots on the ground considered the weather to be bad.

Farrell earned a pilot’s license through an accelerated conversion course for his paragliding accreditation.

The court heard there were doubts about the sufficiency of this training.
