King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark offered a warm display of affection yesterday as they made the first stop on their summer tour.

The royal couple, who have been plagued by rumours of marital problems over the past year, appeared in high spirits during their visit to Bornholm.

The couple were photographed sampling local produce and talking to small business owners during their tour of the tiny island 105 miles southeast of Copenhagen.

During the engagement, Frederik and Mary were photographed laughing and smiling together and later wrote on Instagram how Bornholm had lived up to its nickname “island of the sun”.

Queen Mary, 52, looked effortlessly chic in a white shirt, rust-coloured trousers and chunky trainers.

The mother of four styled her brunette hair in her signature brown waves and completed her understated ensemble with minimal jewelry and tortoiseshell sunglasses.

Meanwhile, King Frederick, 56, looked dapper in a fitted blue shirt, brown trousers and boots.

Members of the Danish royal family have been touring the country on the royal yacht Dannebrog every summer for the past 100 years.

This is the first time that Frederick and Mary have taken part in a summer tour as reigning monarchs, following the King’s accession to the throne in January.

Last year, it was Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe, 84, who completed the journey by boat.

In December 2023, Queen Margaret shocked the nation and many royal watchers around the world when she used her annual New Year’s Eve speech to announce live on television that she was stepping down as Queen after 52 years.

This made Margaret the first monarch to abdicate the Danish throne in 900 years and led to speculation that the royals had made this decision to keep their daughter-in-law, who is extremely popular with the public, on their side.

The announcement came just weeks after Frederik made headlines when he was photographed on a night out in Madrid with a Mexican socialite, sparking rumours of an alleged “romance”.

The former monarch signed her historic abdication papers alongside her son and grandson, Prince Christian, 18, at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.

The Queen’s last words before leaving the Council of State were: “God save the King.”

The 23-year romance between Australian-born Mary and Frederik was often described as a “real-life fairytale” after they met in a Sydney pub.

But pictures emerged of the monarch spending an evening with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova, the former daughter-in-law of the billionaire Duchess of Alba, in November last year.

The couple were seen walking around Madrid before heading to her apartment building, changing clothes and going out again for the night.

The Danish Palace has declined to comment on rumours of a romance between Frederik and Genoveva, however the socialite has strongly denied any suggestion of a romantic relationship.

The luxury yacht hosts the Royal Family both on private holidays and during official engagements abroad.

The yacht’s royal compartment still contains furniture and fittings dating back to 1879 that were aboard the family’s previous yacht.

After touring Bornholm and hosting a reception on board the yacht last night, the royal couple will sail towards the municipality of Ærø.
