‘He arrived in London at the height of his career, having won the Best Actor Oscar for American Beauty in 2000.
‘He wanted to emulate the great English actors like Olivier and Gielgud and thought that by becoming artistic director of the Old Vic, a theatre closely associated with them, he would achieve this.
“And he held that title for more than ten years, with every door open to him, but at the same time he had the feeling that he could have anything he wanted sexually. And that ended up ruining him.
“This apartment is where it all happened… and where it all went wrong.”
The source added: ‘Kevin is listed as a resident there since at least 2004, but it’s unclear whether he ever owned it – it’s possible he was just renting.
‘After all, he is very cautious about his financial affairs.
“But the fact that it has moved and is for sale says a lot about its situation.”
