A content creator has revealed that she doesn’t buy bottled water that has been exposed to the sun.

Kayle, a nanny in Chicago who has not given her last name, shared a short TikTok showing stacks of bottled water being sold for $6.99 outside a gas station.

In her video about the 24-pack, she warned viewers: “I may be crazy, but I hope no one buys this water. The reason is that the sun shines all day on this plastic. Don’t drink water that’s out in the open.”

The influencer, who captioned her video “drinking a lot of plastic,” inspired a major online conversation: Is it safe to drink bottled water that has been exposed to the sun?

Lead researcher Huase Ou, who is behind the Eco-Environment and Health Studyshared: ‘Our findings provide compelling evidence that plastic bottles, when exposed to sunlight, can release toxic compounds that pose health risks.’

Scientists at Jinan University in China analyzed six types of plastic bottles from Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Japan and China for their research.

The study included different types of water, such as spring water, distilled water, and artesian water, and the effects of sunlight and UVA radiation on each.

Scientists found that the water bottles were emitting chemicals, including a highly toxic and carcinogenic chemical called n-hexadecane and other carcinogens.

According to the National Library of Medicinen-Hexadecane, known as H304, is labeled as an “aspiration hazard” and “may be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.”

Huase warned: “Consumers should be aware of these risks, especially in environments where bottled water is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.”

The director of the Johns Hopkins University Water Institute, Dr. Kellogg Schwab, has shared with Time‘A chemical called bisphenol A, or BPA, along with other things used to make plastic, can leach into water if the bottle is heated or left in the sun.’

These toxic chemicals have also been linked to heart disease and cancer.

While the scientists behind the study do not recommend drinking bottled water that has been exposed to the sun as a preferred option, they also mentioned that the “potential health risks” of doing so appear small.

The researchers added: ‘Considering the small mass of a single bottle, the volatilization of (these potentially toxic compounds) from an individual container would be negligible.

‘Even after prolonged exposure to light, the potential health risks associated with inhalation (of toxic chemicals) from opening and drinking bottled water appear manageable.’
