How 49ers quarterback Purdy tied Hall of Famer Warner in the NFL record book against the Rams Originally appeared in NBC Bay Area Sports
49ers quarterback Brock Purdy etched his name into the NFL record books alongside fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer San Francisco’s 27-24 defeat against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
Purdy finished the Week 3 loss with a 134.0 passer rating, matching Kurt Warner for the second-most regular-season games (16) by a quarterback in his first 25 starts in league history.
San Francisco’s only rival, Patrick Mahomeshas had more, with 18 to start his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Purdy came in tied for third in NFL history with other notable quarterbacks such as Carson Palmer, Dak Prescott and Tony Romo. Now, Purdy can claim the second spot for himself in Week 4 against the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium in what will be the 25th regular-season start for the 24-year-old.
Purdy completed 21 of 29 passes (six of the eight incompletions were losses) for 258 yards and three touchdowns against the Rams, with the three scores and 175 yards strictly for Wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
The 49ers entered the game without the Purdy’s Most Favorite Weapons — wide receiver Deebo Samuel, tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey — but the third-year pro looked composed and comfortable against LA’s secondary despite the loss.
Purdy has played against 21 teams in the regular season during his career, but has never faced the Patriots. His matchup with first-year New England coach Jerod Mayo and first-year defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington will be news to everyone.
Purdy, the 262nd and final overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has come a long way quickly. He has an 18-6 regular-season record, was a finalist for the 2023 NFL MVP award and led the 49ers to a narrow Super Bowl LVI loss to the Chiefs.
The Iowa State product has a chance to add to his legacy in Week 4. Hopefully, Purdy believes Kittle will be available as San Francisco looks to bounce back after two tough losses.
