Apprentice jockey Ivy Lam was airlifted to hospital on Monday afternoon after suffering a horror racing accident at Gawler Racecourse in South Adelaide.

The 23-year-old jockey was riding Jacob’s Gate in the 1,500m Willow Grove Stud Handicap.

About 800 meters into the race, her horse appeared to retreat into the field before Lam, a native of Hong Kong, was subsequently dislodged.

Emergency services treated the cyclist at the scene.

An apprentice jockey suffered “critical injuries” after falling on Monday

According channel nineParamedics stated that the cyclist was “being treated for critical head injuries” and “being airlifted to the hospital.”

The incident occurred at approximately 4:45 pm local time, so the race was suspended before the last race of the day.
