Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to tears when the Portugal captain was denied a penalty by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak in pursuit of his first Euro 2024 goal.

Portugal had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the round of 16 during extra time, but saw their penalty agonisingly saved by the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper.

A frustrating night as Ronaldo tried desperately to score, his extra-time penalty effort forced Oblak into a stunning save, but his effort was deflected off the post.

Ronaldo was unable to control his emotions after the effort and burst into tears as Roberto Martinez gathered his squad together for a team talk.

The 39-year-old cried passionately as his team-mates consoled him after his mistake as Portugal attempted to come back for the second half of extra time against Slovenia.

His penalty would have put Portugal in a good position to win the match as they looked to take the lead in the dying minutes of the game, with Ronaldo confidently stepping up to shoot.

Liverpool winger Diogo Jota was fouled inside the box and gave the former Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus star a chance from 12 yards that many expected him to convert.

Ronaldo had previously missed just 29 of his 192 career penalties, and Sunday’s was his first since being denied a goal in Manchester United’s FA Cup shootout against Middlesbrough in 2022.

The Al-Nassr striker could not contain his emotions when the referee blew the whistle for half-time following Ronaldo’s sensational miss and broke down in tears during iconic scenes.

Portugal’s stars surrounded Ronaldo and tried to calm him down knowing their Euro 2024 fate was at stake.

Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot attempted to console Ronaldo, pulling him aside while giving him words of comfort and trying to help the team captain regain his composure.
