Police are appealing for information after uncovering grim evidence that a mother had given birth on the banks of a river in Sydney’s southwest.

Emergency services were called to the Cooks River near Wardell Road, Earlwood, about 4.30pm on Monday after “evidence of a birth” had been located.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command arrived to find evidence that a child had been born near the water.

Police have serious concerns for the well-being of the boy and his mother.

The agents urge the mother to go to the nearest hospital to receive urgent care for her and her son.
